I think that the art of songwriting is beyond creative, it is mysterious and as it is mystical. When I consider the lyrics of certain worship songs I’m in awe of how their composition came about. Like this one song — Hosanna, a line in it goes: “Break my heart for what breaks yours.”
The vulnerability in those words, the total surrender and defenselessness in that sentence just melts your heart as you utter them. Naturally, as humans our first instincts is to protect our hearts but in this song we take our hearts and lay it on the altar — we give it to God and say, ‘break it for what breaks yours.’
On the one hand, we are saying to God, we make ourselves susceptible to whatever hurts you. We want to feel what you feel. At the same time it speaks of the hardness of our hearts. So we surrender our hearts of stone in exchange for a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:26b I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. — NIV
