As a teenager I loved and watched the videos Kids Praise 4&5 repeatedly. In Kids Praise 4, there was this charming character Charity Church Mouse who was on her way to becoming a gospel singing star. She was so, so, so determined that this was the right thing to do until she had a dream where God revealed to her that her hell-bent-dream to become a gospel singing star was not His will for her.
Charity awoke from that dream with a fresh burning desire that was a song from the Spirit — “Make me a servant, humble and meek, Lord help me lift up, those who are weak. And may the prayer of my heart always be, Make me a servant… today.” At the end of writing and singing the song, Charity had a new burning desire, instead of going on tour to become a gospel singing star, she would remain to lead the church mouse choir.
I can almost hear the thoughts of someone — this is sooo old school. But is it? I mean I remember when all we used to pray as teenagers is ‘Here I am, use me!’ It was a deep longing that we all had. To be used by God. To be a vessel in His hands. To hear His voice. To be filled with His Spirit. But today the spotlight is on us — superstars. And our telescope has turned away from searching out the heavens to obsessing over power, control, fame, money and influence. Everyone is in pursuit of his or her personal goals, and dreams and like Charity when she first started, hardly is anyone stopping to say, “Lord, what will you have me do? Not my will, but yours be done.”
There is a call for us to return to our first Love.
