Recently, the Lord introduced me to A.W. Tozer. I have been reading one of his works for sometime now, and I will like to share some of it with you. Receive insight and understanding as you read in Jesus name.
Alone with God
Jacob was alone with God. You must have God all by yourself. You and God have to figure things out. If you have never learned or never experienced the depths of loneliness before God, chances are you are not in the position to have God do very much for you. All the great men had to go to God alone. God had to let this all work out to get Jacob by himself in a state of complete loneliness. That was when God appeared to Jacob.
Before any man will start to woo God, God must begin to woo the man. God must be there first. So God appeared to Jacob, and that was the reason for his discontent and unrest in his heart and the aimless activity he was going through. The eternal mystery had been overshadowing the man Jacob.
As Jacob fled from his home, one of the most wonderful things happened to him. He lay down that night in the wilderness, and as he slept, he saw a ladder that reached up into the heavens “and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.” —Genesis 28:12

My Commentary:
As a youngster, remember how you would go to your aunt’s house with your friend, or visit the home of your classmate with another friend tagging along. Well, with God the protocol is different. You come alone. You have to go to God alone. You MUST have God all by yourself. What we see today however, is that many break that protocol without even thinking. In fact, they believe that what they do is the right thing. When they come into God’s presence, they carry along the thoughts, definitions and interpretations of their Pastors, fav ministers and popular preachers. And so when God speaks, instead of hearing what God is saying, they hear what men have taught. So that the place of prayer becomes a place of religious, powerless ritual. Man has taken the place of God. The messenger has taken the place of the message. We loose the opportunity to be transformed by God’s Word. We miss out on life transforming encounters with our Heavenly Father. We have chosen the mesmerization of men over God’s free gift of salvation.
John 4:23 But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him.
