One of the most beautiful names of God is ‘I AM’. Moses had asked God, “Who should I say sent me?” and God answered, “Tell them, I AM sent you.” God’s name is his self-revelation and this one is particularly powerful for a couple of reasons:
a) It is God’s name, given by God Himself
b) It is a name that is all-encompassing. In this name, God gives us a blank cheque – he can be anything we need him to be in any situation in our lives:
He says, I am ------------- your joy.
He says, I am -------------your strength.
He says, I am -------------your healer.
He says, I am------------- your comforter.
He says, I am ------------- your everything.
When God says His name is “I AM who I AM” or “I will be what I will be,” He’s also saying that He can’t be defined. He can’t be pegged down or crammed neatly into a box tagged ‘God’. He’s omnipotent enough to raise the dead to life, He’s omniscient enough to see your future and He’s omnipresent enough to give you your next breath.
While the Israelites wandered through the desert, it was very vital that God was “I AM” because they needed God to be God in every situation. As the Israelites journeyed, God became:
I am the God who parts the seas
I am the God who brings water from the rocks.
I am the God who rains down manna from heaven.
I am the God in the cloud by day
I am the God in there by night.
Like the Israelites, you and I journey through different kinds of wildernesses each day and we need our God to be God in every circumstance. Like me, you may need your God to be “the ‘I am’ who strengthens you” or perhaps you just need your God to be the “I am—your friend”. Because God is I AM, we can boldly say that our God, the great Jehovah is more than enough.
Yours in love,
MOI
